Most Biblical scholars agree that demons are fallen angels who serve Satan (Revelation 12:8, 9) Demons throughout the Bible are also known as evil spirits, familiar spirits, lying spirits, angels of Satan, etc. The devil can’t be everywhere at one time, so he uses demons to hurt God’s kids. Demons tempt, entice, torment, defile, deceive, confuse, etc. and they usually start slowly in subtle ways. Demons have different ranks under Satan, different names and assignments. Demons are given power and authority by people through sin. Demons absolutely can oppress Christians, but Jesus has given Christians the authority and power through the Holy Spirit to concur them.

Yes. Christians can be oppressed but not possessed by demons. Demons possess people’s spirits. A Christian is a new spirit creation in Christ and belongs to God. So a demon can’t possess a Christian. But a Christian’s soul is not made perfect when they are born again. Demons will continue to oppress a Christian’s soul to the greatest degree they are given authority by the Christian (read C.S. Lewis’ book Screwtape Letters for a great example of this).

Removing the demon’s legal authority and allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to drive it out brings freedom.
